ABC Dim Sum downhill alert

Upon reading Ruth’s report on ABC’s dim sum disappointment, I went there the other day at lunch with a friend to check it out. It’s been awhile since I’ve been there. We sat down and ordered the following:

Har Gao – This was the first dish we tried and immediately I knew something was not right. This was not the original Har Gao that I’ve had previously. The skin was thin yet tough, and the shrimp inside was dry and overcooked. Bad.

Ribs in Black Bean Sauce – This was another disappointment. As Ruth noted previously, there’s no black bean in sight, and even worse is that the meat was tough. We arrived around 12:30, so there’s no excuse that it’s the first batch from the kitchen so as to be rushed. Very Bad.

Salted Dumpling (Hum Sui Gao?) – This was just ok, the filling was very skimpy.

Fried Tarot Dumpling – nothing compared to the other places. The taro skin was very thick and the filling was almost non-existent. The temperature was sort of cold on this.

Pan-fried Daikon Cake – This was average – not as crisply browned as I like. Also not very hot.

Fried Shrimp Dumpling – by this time the other dishes were so bad this one seemed pretty tasty. Again, temperature lukewarm.

Shrimp Chowfun – This seemed most “normal”, similar to what I had before. Then again, it’s hard to make this dish bad even if tried.

Steamed Broccoli w/ Oyster sauce – This is also normal, though the stem was pretty tough.

So there you have it. The dimsum we had today definitely pretty bad. It would not even qualify as a candidate for the dim sum war. I’m very curious as to see if this is a permanent trend or is it just that the original dim sum chefs are on vacation or something… Let’s hope it’s the latter.
