Zha Jiang Mian and more at Tai Wha Sunnyvale

I went to Tai Wha to try out their noodles and see how their La Jiao Rou (Hot Pepper Beef) is. On discussing with the owner, she recommended the Gan Pong Chicken instead. Their verison is the breaded boneless chicken version and not the chicken wings version.
For the noodle, I ordered the San Xian Gan Zha Jiang Mian (Seafood Gun Cha Chang Mein on the menu)

Gan Pong Chicken

The Gan Pong Chicken came in a very large plate. It looked and smelled great with small bits of hot pepper, onion, carrots, green peas, all dry-sauteed with the breaded chicken pieces. It was dry as it should be. The flavor was spicy and black peppery. It was not as garlicky as I’d like, but still the flavor was infused wonderfully.

Zhan Jiang Mian

The Zha Jiang Mian came in their separate noodle and mixture bowls. The three seafood consisted of the standard squid, shrimp, and sea cucumber pieces. The noodles are homemade but a little thinner than the “original Shandong la-mian”, but were still good and chewy. It seems most of the noodles at Korean-Chinese restaurants these days are this thinness, probably due to the machine press mold size. After mixing in the “Jiang” I finished this dish in no time.

It seems most of the customers at the restaurant were ordering the special Chao Ma Mian (Chow Ma Mein) which seemed a great deal at $3.99 only. The basic Zha Jiang Mian is also cheap at only $4.99. Next time I would definiltey be back to try their Three Seafood Chao Ma Mian.

This place’s menu is rather simple yet authentically Shandong with only 3 sections – Dumplings, Noode/Rice, and Main Dishes. All of them are Korean-Chinese standards – no Kung Pao chicken here or other non-Shandong dishes at all. Dumplings include all three types – Fried, Steamed, or Boiled. The Two Pieces of Skin/Liang Zhang Pi dish here is listed under main dish as Combination Cold Plate.

All in all, another Korean-Chinese restaurant in the south bay and I can’t be more happier.
